Portugal’s National Election Commission and the National Cyber Security Centre are preparing pilot initiatives to try to minimise the problem of ‘fake news’ in the European and general elections scheduled for next year in Portugal.

Fake news, or false news created purely for political advantage, is widely believed to have played a role in the election of Donald Trump, the Brexit referendum in the United Kingdom and, more recently, in presidential elections in Brazil.
