Patricia Vasconcellos is going to Portugal.

As the winner of the 2018 Allens Pond Duck Derby and dinner for two anywhere in the world, Vasconcellos carefully picked her grand-prize destination.

That is, after she accepted that she had, indeed, won.

"When we started to listen to the call on our answering machine, we initially thought it was a marketing call for a condo or something. When we realized it was a real call and that I had won the Duck Derby, we were thrilled," said Vasconcellos, who is bringing husband Ron along for the ride. "We are excited to explore our family history in Portugal and are looking forward to the trip.”

The annual derby, held in August, raises money for the Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuary. People buy numbered rubber ducks and ch eer as they coast across the pond. The first one to shore gets the coveted grand prize.

"The staff at Mass Audubon’s Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary are thrilled that this year’s winner honors the memory of one of the sanctuary’s dear friends and dedicated volunteers, Elaine Seguer," Allens Pond said in a news release. "Patricia Vasconcellos entered the Duck Derby as a part of her entry in the annual Elaine Seguer Ladies Invitational golf event at the Allendale Country Club, which celebrates the life and passions of Elaine, who passed in 2015. Elaine was a true champion of nature, wildlife and, in particular, Mass Audubon’s Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary."

The prize includes two round-trip airplane tickets, two nights of lodging and a free dinner at the destination of the winner's choice. Past winners have picked spots including Hawaii, India, Aruba, Zambia, New Zealand, Tanzania, China, Argentina, the Dominican Republic, France and Ecuado r.

The 16th annual derby will be held Aug. 10 and 11, 2019. Ducks can be adopted at massaudubon.org/allenspond.

This year's event had 45 prize donors. The grand prize was sponsored by Sylvan Nursery, The Bayside Restaurant, Nye Synthetic Lubricants, BayCoast Bank, Compton Catering and Clambakes, Oppenheimer, Buckley and Moniz, Village Travel and Austin Limousine Service. Festival sponsors were Watchman Waterproofing, Fiber Optic Center Inc. and Whaling City Sound of New Bedford. Tents were donated by Sperry Tents. Food was provided by Coastal Roasters, Eva’s Garden and Bayside.
