Half of the Algarve has this morning been placed on the highest fire alert.

The advisory issued by the Portuguese Met Office, listed Monchique, Silves, Portimão, Loulé, Tavira, São Brás de Alportel, Alcoutim and Castro Marim as the areas in the Algarve where firefighters were be on the maximum level of readiness due to the imminent risk of wildfires.

The prevailing weather conditions has also seen a further 12 districts placed maximum alert.
