But he died at the scene before paramedics could reach him.

The unnamed 57-year-old was on holiday with his wife, who is thought to have witnessed the tragedy.

The alarm was sounded just after 4.30pm yesterday at Vila Marichique, a quiet private complex a short drive from the centre of Alvor and the sea.

Its website says the complex has 4.8 acres of gardens with a “large lake size swimming pool for adults” as well as a children’s splash pool and children’s playground."

Police sources said they believed the Brit tourist may have had a heavy meal or drinks before going for a swim, although an autopsy will now take place in nearby Portimao.

A well-placed source said: “He was pulled out of the pool by a Portuguese tourist and started vomiting when he was already out of the water.”

Apartments at Vila Marichique are popular with British and Irish tourists.

One recent visitor wrote on booking.com: “Very friendly people.
